340 - HarmoNIA - Harmonization and Networking for contaminant assessment in the Ionian and Adriatic Seas

340 HarmoNIA Harmonization and Networking for contaminant assessment in the Ionian and Adriatic Seas
The implementation of environmental policies and protocols in the marine Adriatic and Ionian region is considered limited in particular as regard the assessment of contamination from hazardous substances. Countries sharing a marine environment should cooperate to ensure a systematic approach to environmental monitoring, good environmental status (GES) and related assessment.

The HarmoNIA project aims at improving the harmonization of monitoring protocols for assessing contaminants in the marine environment, as well as sharing best practices to support transnational harmonization in the context of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (Directive 2008/56/EC) and of the Mediterranean Action Plan within United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP/MAP).

The project’s expected achievements are:

  • A transnational network of institutions adopting a joint data management system for contaminants in the marine environment;
  • Development of a regional strategy to improve harmonized monitoring and assessment of contaminants in the marine environment;
  • Development of a regional strategy for a shared and harmonized evaluation of the risk due to contaminant dispersion from different sources of pollution.

69 - I-STORMS - Integrated Sea sTORm Management Strategies

69 I-STORMS Integrated Sea sTORm Management Strategies
Together with the anthropic pressures, the scientific community recognises extreme sea storms as one of the major factors that affect the coastal changes. Coastal flooding and erosion impacts on ecosystems, damages in infrastructures and productive activities can be worsened if combined with the absence of adequate early warning systems, coordinated strategies, coastal management and planning with significant related economic costs.

I-STORMS project aims at improving early warning and civil protection procedures and practices to safeguard the Adriatic-Ionian area from sea storms.

Main I-STORMS achievements will be:

  • Increased knowledge on sea storms and procedures for emergency response, also through the elaboration of a sea storm atlas providing a tool for coastal disasters mapping and an analysis of the current procedures for emergencies responses to sea storms.
  • IT tools for supporting hazard and risk assessment of sea storms;
  • The elaboration of a strategy for ensuring effective responses to sea storms emergencies
  • The building of a network of relevant actors in charge of forecasting and early warning of sea storm emergency.

496 - APPRODI - From Ancient Maritime Routes to eco-touristic destinations

496 APPRODI From Ancient Maritime Routes to eco-touristic destinations
ADRION area hosts ancient harbour sites, which at present are not sufficiently valorised by the community of cultural heritage actors and whose high potential for economic growth as ecotourism off-season destination has not fully exploited yet.

The APPRODI project aims to increase the attractiveness of tourist destinations by creating new ecotourism products in the Adriatic and Ionian area.

The project intends to:

–          Increase knowledge on cultural heritage linked to ancient maritime routes gained through mapping of ancient maritime routes and shared on a web-based portal;

–          Increase skills in management of cultural heritage through training, marketing and promotion activities;

–          Develop action plan for sustainable ecotourism promotion;

–          Implement pilot actions for testing and promoting ancient maritime routes as new ecotourism products.

205 - PORTODIMARE - geoPORtal of TOols & Data for sustainable Management of coAstal and maRine Environment

205 PORTODIMARE geoPORtal of TOols & Data for sustainable Management of coAstal and maRine Environment
A transnational integrated planning and management of coastal and marine environments in accordance with an ecosystem-based approach is a precondition for the preservation of coastal and marine ecosystems for the future generations.

In this regard, PORTODIMARE project aims at creating a platform for the development of a shared framework and new approaches on environmental protection and ecosystem services. Such a tool shall support the decision-making process concerning the analysis and risk assessment of Integrated Coastal Zone Management and Maritime Spatial Planning.

In this view, PORTODIMARE project will test the use of the Geoportal as a concrete support for the development, in four demonstration areas, of strategies and action plans that couple environmental protection and sustainable development of sea/coast uses, within the regional and transnational framework established by Directive 2014/89/EU and EUSAIR Action Plan.

450 - IMPRECO - Common strategies and best practices to IMprove the transnational PRotection of ECOsystem integrity and services

450 IMPRECO Common strategies and best practices to IMprove the transnational PRotection of ECOsystem integrity and services
The ecosystem services in the protected areas need to be monitored and assessed in order to preserve the quality of the ecosystem itself, as well as to ensure a sustainable use of natural resources.

The IMPRECO project aims to enhance the preservation of ecosystem services by strengthening biodiversity and ecosystems conservation in protected areas.

The project addresses such common challenges applying the so called ESS approach but in an innovative way: unleashing Protected Areas (PA) potential as laboratories to test innovative measures for ES conservation and transferring them in the surrounding territories through the application of a quadruple helix approach.

IMPRECO intends to:

  • Increase competences and skills of project partners concerning the conservation of biodiversity, ecosystem and ecosystem services;
  • Develop and implement an integrated management system for protected areas;
  • Increase data availability and information on biodiversity, ecosystem and ecosystem services; quality level through the development of an e-learning platform;
  • Set up a transnational network of relevant actors on ecosystem management and conservation;
  • Develop a strategy for the ecosystem management and conservation, together with a set of innovative governing tools.
